Beaumaris Castle North Wales

Construction began on Beaumaris Castle in 1295 on the orders of King Edward I of England and proved to be the last castle constructed by him in Wales and the only castle on Anglesey.

Unlike the other castles that formed the 'iron ring' designed to subdue the Welsh uprisings Beaumaris Castle was built in a concentric design and is perhaps the ultimate example of this type of castle anywhere in the United Kingdom.

Today the castle is under the care of Cadw and is open to the public most days throughout the year. Visitors can walk along the ancient walls and enjoy the views towards distant Snowdonia.

It is easy to see why the location was chosen when you consider, in conjunction with Caernarfon Castle at the southern end of the Menai Straits, control over the waterway became complete.

Opening Times

Beaumaris Castle is open from 9am to 5pm each day from 1st April to 31st October.

1st November to 31st March opening times are from 9.30am to 4pm (Monday to Saturday) and 11am to 4pm on Sunday.
